To be connected to the earth, the elements, and the more-than- human-world is to be in deep conversation with the wilds of one’s own soul. And yet, our culture demands us to be routined and domesticated. What might it take to ‘rewild’ our souls? And how might we do it? Author, educator and barefoot explorer Claire Dunn has been on a journey to find out, and returned to tell the tale.
““Bone by bone, hair by hair, Wild Woman comes back. Through night dreams, through events half understood and half remembered...” ”
Working for many years as an environmental campaigner in her twenties, Claire turned her attention to the human-nature connection, studying reconnection and deep ecology with Joanna Macy, eco-psychology, and wilderness survival skills.
In 2010, Claire embarked on a year of bush retreat, studying traditional living skills and practices of deep nature connection. It was a transformational journey that asked more of her than she imagined, challenging every layer of the human experience - physical, emotional and spiritual.
Her recent book My Year Without Matches: Escaping the City in Search of the Wild is the highly successful memoir of that year, inspiring many others to explore the wilds both outside and those within.
Above all, Claire is passionate about the project of cultural repair and regeneration through bringing back the practices that create healthy villages and connection to self, earth and other.
Claire currently facilitates nature-based reconnection retreats, contemporary wilderness rites of passage and offers individual mentoring.
