Traditionally, winter is a time for gathering close to the fire with others, and crafting by hand the tools and objects for living closely with the earth. It is a time for connection and creativity at the hearth.
Join us for our first SkillsOn Saturday workshop, this one dedicated to the warming winter skills of fire-by-friction and coal-burn spoon making.
The ‘hand-drill’ fire-method you will learn is the traditional Aboriginal Australian method – a profound technology that will not only teach you a skill vital for wilderness survival, but also transform your relationship to fire forevermore. If you have already learnt this fire technique, come along and practice in a supportive environment. If you’ve been practicing, awesome, come along to learn some more advanced techniques.
Coal-burning is a traditional method used to create beautiful spoons, bowls and other items using coals from the fire, as well as whittling and carving with a knife. The technique is simple, fun and meditative. Like most earth skills, you will find hours fly by absorbed in the task, and the company of other crafters. As well as going home with a beautiful handmade spoon (perfect for a gift), you will learn a valuable survival skill, and much improved woodworking and knife skills.
